Alex Van Den Heever
Master Tracker
Captivated by the traditional skills of wildlife tracking, Alex has made a profound contribution to conservation on the African continent.
After dedicating much of his life to learning the ancient art of tracking, Alex qualified as one of a handful of tracker assessors in 2004 – the youngest ever to achieve this feat.
After completing his studies in Marketing and Business Management, Alex began his remarkable journey at Londolozi Game Reserve in 1995. His roles evolved over the years from Game Ranger, to include Guide, Environmental Manager, Marketing, and Leader of Specialized Safaris. However, it was the traditional skills of wildlife tracking that captured Alex’s deepest passion.
Over the last two decades Alex has tracked jaguars in the Amazon jungle, bears in California, grizzlies and wolves in Montana, kangaroos with Aboriginal trackers in the Australian outback and the famous black-mane lions of the Kalahari.
He is the co-founder and General Manager of the Tracker Academy; a NGO which trains unemployed people in traditional skills of tracking.
He is also a director and shareholder of EcoTraining, Africa’s largest private guide training school, and a co-founder of Wild Signs, which owns the Tracking Success corporate training programme.
Beyond his work in conservation, Alex founded Nhlayisa Nutrition Solutions, an NGO that distributes over a million nutritious meals annually for rural communities in Africa.
Alex is also the co-author of two bestselling books, the Tracker Manual and Changing a Leopard’s Spots.
